The Cap'n is anomalous entity present in some personalized copies of Super Mario 64, although remnants of him can be found in lesser personalized copies. Most reports stop at The Cap'n simply being mentioned in a sign in Jolly Roger Bay saying:
"Aarrgh! Ahoy, matey. I have sunken treasure, here, I do. But to pluck the plunder, you must open the Treasure Chests in the right order. What order is that, ye say? I'll never tell! -The Cap'n"
There are, however, reports of the Cap'n that exist beyond the simple sign. That range from new text to a new star.
Message Changes[]
There are several reports that there would be changes in the above-mentioned sign. Some claim that the sign would change to somewhat of a captain's log:
"Day 183: It's been more than two months since the fateful Jolly Roger sunk, I've ran out of rations and I'm likely not going to make. So, with my last dying act, I will hide our greatest treasure among these Treasure Chests, only to be found by the one who can open them in the right order."
This seems to imply that the power star was the Jolly Roger's greatest item and that it was buried as the crew was trapped within the underwater cave of JRB. Other reports claim that the sign was changed to:
"The secret to get our prized treasure is to open the chests in the right order. That order being back, left, right, front. -The Cap'n"
Other reports are similar to the sign before but trail off before the quote, or simply state the wrong order:
"The secret to get our prized treasure is to open the chests in the right order. That order being... "The secret to get our prized treasure is to open the chests in the right order. That order being front, left, back, right. -The Cap'n"
Appearance[]
While not as common as text changes, some have reported actually seeing a pile of bones in the underwater cavern to even encountering the ghost of the captain. Apparently taking the form of a ghost Koopa he is pale blue with a gray pirate hat mounted on his head.
Behavior[]
The ghost of the Cap'n is an entity not found in many copies of Super Mario 64; thus, little is known about what it can do. However, it is known that the ghost can be hostile as well as peaceful.
Some claim that the ghost will attack on sight, and must be defeated to achieve a star, in place of the treasure chest star mentioned prior. This star is allegedly called "Ghostly Grumble." Others say that in order to get a star, one must help the ghost overcome his grief of the sunken ship by helping the ghosts of other crew members.
Theories[]
Many have noticed a Koopa shell located underwater inside a clam. Due to this many have suspected this to be the remains of the Cap'n, however we know from above text changes that the Cap'n died in the cave, likely meaning this was a crew member that passed away.
