The basement is the second floor of Princess Peach's Castle you gain access to in Super Mario 64, unlocked after beating Bowser in the Dark World. It contains Hazy Maze Cave, Lethal Lava Land, Shifting Sand Land, Dire, Dire Docks, and Bowser in the Fire Sea. You can also access the pillars required to drain the moat of the Castle Grounds and access Vanish Cap Under the Moat. It contains the first star given by a Toad, as well as the encounters with MIPS the Rabbit.
Courses[]
N | Painting | Course | Description |
---|---|---|---|
6 | Hazy Maze Cave | This course is accessed by jumping into a pool of chromatic liquid in a room full of pipes. It is filled with toxic gas, bottomless pits, Scuttlebugs and Monty Moles. It is also home to Dorrie. Notably, this is the only course in the game where Mario can access another level from within, namely the Cavern of the Metal Cap. | |
7 | Lethal Lava Land | This is the only course in the basement entered through a normal painting. It's a hot, volcanic level mostly covered in boiling hot lava, hence the name. Mario has to jump between small, charred platforms in order to survive while avoiding fire balls and Bullies. | |
8 | Shifting Sand Land | A desert-themed world hidden behind a false wall that ripples and contorts when touched, this area is home to several unique enemies found nowhere else in the game, such as Pokeys, Grindels, Spindels, and Tox Boxes. It has a sub-area, the pyramid, which has one of the game's bosses - Eyerok. | |
9 | Dire, Dire Docks | Dire, Dire Docks is an aquatic level that contains Bowser's submarine. Initially, the portal that leads to Dire, Dire Docks will block the way to the next Bowser level, but after completing the first star here, it will relocate. | |
- | Bowser in the Fire Sea | The second Bowser world, this one takes place over a sea of molten lava. Once Bowser is defeated here, he will give up the key that allows Mario to access the Second Floor |
