Poison Piranha Pikes is an anomalous level reported in some personalized copies of Super Mario 64. It is usually described as a sea of purple poisonous water with a few islands and several tall pikes sticking out, allowing the player to traverse. The level also has a unique instance of Enemy Discoloring so far seen exclusively in this level. The level is generally seen replacing Tiny-Huge Island on the second floor of Princess Peach's Castle, or being accessible through the otherwise useless middle painting in the Tiny-Huge Island painting room.
Description[]
Poison Piranha Pikes is described as taking place in a large pool of poisonous water, a unique hazard exclusive to this level that acts similarly to lava and Snowman's Land freezing water, though after the player has taken damage and bounced off of the hazard they will slowly lose health until they are near minimum health. However, others have reported that it can be swam in, though the player immediately starts losing health instead of the usual waiting time before health begins to drain and cannot regenerate health on the top of the water like regular water.
A few islands connected by bridges stick out from this poisonous water, making up the majority of the traversable level, alongside several tall pikes, hence the level's name. The enemies on these islands are Goombas, a small amount of Koopas, Piranha Plants, and unique purple Piranha Plants. These instances of Enemy Discoloring have the same effect as the poisonous water upon being touched. These purple Piranha Plants, dubbed Poison Piranha Plants, have only been reported in this level. Bob-omb Buddies with average dialogue, similar to those seen in Bob-omb Battlefield, can also appear in the level, often discussing the poisonous water.
Whomp's Mines[]
This level has two subareas, both accessible via a cave on one of the islands in the main segment of the level. These subareas are Whomp's Diamond Mines, and Whomp's Emerald Mines. Both appear to be narrow underground mineshaft pathways with crystals hanging from the ceiling, though in the Diamond Mines these crystals are light blue and in the Emerald Mines the crystals are green. As the name suggests, Whomps appear as enemies in these subareas.
These pathways usually lead to dead ends or yellow ? Boxes, which occasionally obtain Power Stars. Notably, some report that the geometry in these subareas rearrange, and the placement of the Power Stars move around with them, both of which occurring even as the player is inside of the subarea. Upon returning to the level after obtaining one of these Power Stars, several people have said the mines grow in size and become narrower each time they enter until they have collected 7 stars, after which the caves would stop growing. To compensate for the increasing amount of Power Stars, more empty ? Boxes would appear throughout the subareas to make finding the Power Stars more difficult.
Missions[]
Poison Piranha Pikes has several commonly reported mission. The most common one is given to the player after defeating every poison Piranha Plant, similarly to Tiny-Huge Island's Pluck the Piranha Flower mission. Two or more can be obtained by opening the ? Boxes found in the Whomp's Mines subareas. Another commonly reported mission is for climbing to the top of one of the pikes. Another less commonly reported mission is finding a Metal Cap and getting to the bottom of the poison water before succumbing to the toxic effects.
