Peach's Bestiary is an alleged unused mechanic in Super Mario 64. It was said to allow the player to collect various pages in order to fill up a bestiary as another collectable outside of Power Stars. Despite it being allegedly unused, players have said to have the mechanic in their personalized copies.
Overview[]
Found in the room for the entrance to The Princess's Secret Slide is a small table containing a book. When the player went over to the book and pressed A, a prompt will pop up that says that there are no pages in the book. Next to the book is a lone Toad, who is said to say the following:
"Oh, Mario! It's terrible! This book, it's the Princess'
bestiary! It's said to have data of all the foes you'll
come across, but when Bowser invaded, he tore up
all the pages and scattered them throughout the
paintings!"
"...Y'know, if I recall correctly, when I was hiding,
Bowser said to his minions to keep guard of the pages!
Mario, I bet if you were to take out some enemies, you
could find the missing pages! Hopefully, you can find them
all, I bet it'll help you a lot on your journey!"
Afterwords, the text box fades away as the game continues. Every enemy is said to have a 25% chance to drop a page of the bestiary, containing a description of said enemy. After collecting a page, a sparkling sound will play, meaning that it has been added to the bestiary. After collecting at least one page, the bestiary can finally be opened, revealing all the pages the player found, which can now be read. By pressing either left or right, the player can turn the page left or right to read more pages, and by pressing B, the player will exit out of the bestiary. Each page has the name and a photo of the enemy, alongside a small description of them and the courses in which they appear, not including shorter, 'bonus' courses (i.e Tower of the Wing Cap) or Bowser courses.
Pages[]
According to players who have allegedly found pages, no one has found every single page, so it is unknown what exactly happens once a player were to complete the bestiary. This is a list of every single page found by a player so far, as well as their descriptions and locations. Note that some of these descriptions are nothing more than faint recollections, so it's best to take these with a grain of salt.
Goomba
These little guys can be found all across the Mushroom Kingdom. I remember when they used to live peacefully amongst us, but it all changed when Bowser first came. Mario's always running into these guys.
|
Koopa
These cowardly turtles run away whenever they see Mario. If Mario jumps on them, they will drop their shell. These shells can be riden across land, water and even lava! Also found in Bob-omb Battlefield or Tiny-Huge Island is Koopa the Quick. No-one has ever been able to beat him in a race.
|
Bob-omb
These little bombs have quite explosive personalities, literally! As soon as anybody they consider an enemy gets near them, they light their fuse and chase after them before exploding! Talk about being hotheaded, they sort of remind me of Bowser in a way!

Chain Chomp
Unknown/Unproven to exist. |
Whomp
These big walls seem to have come to life! They are quite slow, bulky, and dumb, but once they see a foe, they rush towards them and faceplant downwards! A shame that they seem to have trouble covering their backs, however...

Mr. Blizzard
These living, breathing snowmen are anything but jolly, happy souls -- many of them hide out in the snow, waiting to pick a snowball fight with the next person they see. Others like to hop about; watch your head, or you'll find out how a Goomba feels!
|
Spindrift
These little flower fellows seem to like the cold, cold temperatures of places such as Cool, Cool Mountain, as they are commonly seen there. Despite their friendly appearance, they seem to be aggressive whenever an intruder gets close.
|
Boo
These ghastly ghouls seem to be quite rude and playful, as they commonly challenge my subjects to races. Despite their playful rudeness, they are actually quite shy, as when they are stared into their eyes, they are flustered as they stay put.

Scuttlebug
These spiders seem to be native to dark and damp areas, they don't seem 'weak' to light, but they tend to hide away from it by going underground. Maybe they have poor eyesight?
|
Bully
These big balls seem to be related to Bob-ombs, as they have similar appearances and hot-headed personalities. Ironically, being hot seems to be their weakness, as Bullies seem to burn up easily in lava or magma.

Amp

Fly Guy

Pokey

Swoop
These bats are, obviously, most commonly found hanging on the ceiling of cavernous areas. They tend to be peaceful until someone wakes them up, in which they'll fly towards them in an attempt to bite them before going back up.

Monty Mole

Snufit

Shy Guy
These mysterious little fellows seem to have quite the talent for construction and design! Every piece of machinery and platforming in the Hazy Maze Cave was built by them, and some of them can be seen hard at work (even though their idea of working is standing in place or wandering in circles).

Bub

|
Motos

Blargg
Unknown/Unproven to exist |
Chuckya
These big purple... things, also seem to be related to both Bob-ombs and Motos, as they have similar appearances and tend to pick up anybody in their path, similar to that of Motos. Unlike them, however, they are much bigger, and are heavier, too!
I wonder if they also work for Big Bob-omb. Quite unlikely, as I never seen them amongst the hordes of Bob-ombs that sometimes attack parts of the Mushroom Kingdom, but given how similar they look, it shouldn't be impossible that that big bomb mixed them up.

These Bullies may seem cooler than their fiery cousins, but they're anything but chill! Instead of lava, they'll instead try and ram you into the freezing water below.

Speculation[]
Considering about how nearly-finished looking Peach's Bestiary is, it is speculated that the bestiary was cut quite late into development. Due to enemy's native locations being different from the course they actually appear in, it's theorized that the bestiary was made in a build which, while having the same courses in the original retail release of the game, had different enemy placements.
Despite how nearly-finished it was, the bestiary was cut for unknown reasons, though many theories have sprouted attempting to explain why. The most commonly agreed upon theory is that each enemy in the game was either based on existing enemies that most Mario fans would be familiar with, and/or the enemies were so simple and easy to understand that having a bestiary to describe how they work was considered pointless.
Trivia[]
- Peach's Bestiary and the Tattle mechanic from the Paper Mario series are quite similar in a number of ways. It's possible that this cut mechanic could've influenced the Tattle mechanic.
- Interestingly, Enemy's native locations include areas they do not appear in. This could suggest that at one point during development, these enemies could've appeared in these stages, but were cut for one reason or another.
