No Man's Land - 1995-07-29 Build OST-2

The music found in No Man's Land.

No Man's Land seems to be an alternative and anomalous version of the beta level "Snow Slider", with roughly the same level layout and geometry. Most reports claim that "No Man's Land" replaced Snowman's Land in their copy, some however reported it to replace Cool, Cool Mountain.

"No Man's Land" doesn't seem to be just an alternative name for "Snow Slider", as there are some notable differences between what the reports say about "No Man's Land" and the available footage of "Snow Slider".

Differences between Snow Slider and No Man's Land[]

  1. There were no entities besides the penguin family and Mario himself found in No Man's Land.
  2. The presumed penguin mother chases after Mario after he grabs one of the baby penguins, as shown in the Snow Slider footage, however the No Man's Land penguin mother deals incredible and unpredictable amounts of damage to Mario when it bumps into him, comparable to the Slide Box in Jolly Roger Bay. This makes it near impossible to survive taking one of the baby penguins if the player doesn't lure the baby penguins away from their mother before.
  3. There apparently aren't any subareas that could be accessed in No Man's Land, while the footage of Snow Slider showed Mario accessing one by jumping into a hole in the floor of one of the higher parts of the mountain.
  4. Players reported dead and snowy trees being present in the level, whereas Snow Slider apparently had no trees at all. However, this claim hasn't been backed up with convincing footage yet.
  5. Some reports claim that Mario's idle animation was different in "No Man's Land" and showed him crossing his arms while shivering, instead of sleeping on the floor.

Reported Missions[]

  1. The first mission wants the player to take a penguin baby on top of the mountain and deliver it to the mother penguin on the bottom of it, like in Snowman's Land.
  2. The second mission simply demands picking up a power star on the staircase located next to the penguin family.
  3. The third mission is reportedly a simple "find all 8 secrets" star.
  4. It's hard to find believable information around the fourth mission, however most people agree that it has something to do with using a canon to shoot up to the peak of the mountain and doing something with a tree there.
  5. There are no verifiable or believable accounts describing the fifth mission.
  6. The last mission would reportedly involve luring the baby penguins away from the mother penguin, as described earlier, and throwing one of them off the cliff, after which a power star would appear. Take the reports on this mission with a grain of salt.
  7. Even stranger, throwing all the baby penguins off the cliff would award the player with a 100 coins star, which is strange because there aren't any coins present in this level at all. This could very well be reasonably explained as being simply the result of a bug.
No Man's Land

The one thing people that reported on this level unanimously agreed on, was that the atmosphere they felt while playing the level changed with every mission they completed. Reports described the level as upbeat and cheerful when playing the first mission, however the tone seemed to have gotten more and more uncomfortable from the second mission on. The fourth mission appears to be the point in which the atmosphere had completely shifted towards sickening discomfort. This might be related to an anomaly some people have experienced, which apparently removes instruments and parts of the soundtrack every time the player starts a new mission, leaving only the sound of the wind for the last mission.
