Artwork from the Edo period, depicting humans battling Namazu.
Namazu is an unused enemy scrapped early in the development of Super Mario 64. In Japanese mythology, Namazu is described as a giant catfish that lives deep underground and causes earthquakes[1]. It was uncovered only by name (e_namazu[2]) in the source code leak of 2020.
Overview[]
Not much is known about Namazu, but it is theorized that they were replaced by Dorrie sometime during development. As a giant catfish that lives in underground caverns, it can be guessed that they would appear in the lake of Hazy Maze Cave. The flat body and earthquake-related abilities of Namazu may have inspired the mechanic of Mario ground-pounding Dorrie's back. It is possible that the sign reading "Don't become his lunch" originally referred to Namazu.
Phenomena[]
In certain personalized copies, a very incomplete version of Namazu can replace Dorrie in Hazy Maze Cave. Due to Namazu lacking associated files, it will appear to the player that Dorrie has disappeared without explanation. Some more debatable reports claim that Namazu can also replace Mother Dorrie under the right circumstances.
