Mr. I's are enemies in Super Mario 64. They are large eyeballs. They attacks by shooting orbs at Mario upon focusing on them. They are defeated by being circled around.
There is also a boss variant known as a Big Mr. I that appears in Big Boo's Haunt. Mr. I enemies can be found in Big Boo's Haunt, Lethal Lava Land, and Hazy Maze Cave.
Phenomena[]
Anomalous Locations[]
As with all enemies, Mr. I is not restricted to its three standard levels when personalization is involved. Records of Mr. I's appearance is all over the place, but the most consistent additions are Bowser In The Dark World, Dire Dire Docks, and Tower of the Wing Cap. Mr. I do not work properly in water or air, as they cannot record vertical movements and do not shoot bubbles upwards. So they cannot be killed in such situations, but are also not big obstacles. Additionally, Mr. I will sometimes load partially inside walls, making it impossible to kill it at all.
Projectile Behavior[]
It's been seen that Mr. I's projectiles can sometimes act uniquely. Mr. I's bubbles have been replaced with fireballs, balls of light, stars, and more obviously incorrect assets like dancing flowers or Koopa shells. When specifically fireballs, Mario jumps upwards when hit as if he fell in lava. And Koopa shells act like standard Koopa shells, bouncing around the floor. Other physics changes have been seen, like homing bubbles, bouncing bubbles, or bubbles that just stop moving after a certain point. There's been at least two glitches found by Mr. I creating bubbles that aren't removed, until there's so many objects in the game that it crashes or bugs out. There's been additional incidents where Mr. I does not shoot projectiles at all, or where its projectiles have hitboxes but no assets associated with them. If it seems that it's not shooting anything, be careful- it might just be a lack of visual asset.
Bizarrely, there's a glitch associated with Mr. I where it shoots out proper, functional stars. The method that the A.I. uses to alter assets or functionality is not perfect, and for some reason Mr. I's bubble projectiles are close enough to Stars that the effect has happened multiple times. These stars are of a random I.D. but always of the same I.D., meaning once you collect the star, you'll be collecting duplicates of that star instead of a distinct star.
Red Eye[]
In some personalized copies, the iris of Mr. I is of a red coloration instead of a blue one. These Mr. I's are bulkier- requiring more spins around it in order to kill it, and their projectiles tend to behavior abnormally in a similar way as to the above section. Because Mr. I and Big Mr. I hold the same visual asset, Big Mr. I's will also have a red iris in this situation, though it usually doesn't affect Big Mr. I's stats or behavior. If the player is able to get wet and make the drop particles touch a Red Eye, the enemy will turn into a normal Mr. I. This could be referencing a way to cure irritated eyes or how we use tears to keep our eyes wet and smooth.
Two subvariants of the Red Eye called Bloodshot Eye and Glowing Red Eye can sometimes manifest instead of a Red Eye. Both iterations only appear in copies with a high amount of personalisation that are played by skilled players, as such, very few sightings of them have taken place. Reports talk about the Bloodshot Eye being similar to a Red Eye but with the red coloration also present in the sclera, the white part of the eyes. This entity is claimed to shoot faster projectiles, at a higher rate of fire and have better tracking whereas the Glowing Red Eye has extended or even infinite range for both its area of detection and projectile distance, instakilling high-speed shots and a sparkling particle effect that is supposed to point out when it is going to shoot. The method to survive this last enemy is to find coverage as the projectiles will immediatly disappear if they hit a stage element.
Watery Mr. I[]
This type of Mr. I features tears that it uses to attack Mario. There are three kinds of tears: Basal tears that appear constantly by default, Emotional tears, which will appear while Mr. I is being spun around or if it gets hit by Mario's punches and kicks, and Reflex tears that manifest when the dust particles generated by Mario come in contact with Mr.I. All of these tears will fall on the ground and create ponds which will make Mario slide and even trip, moreover, getting wet by these ponds will also increase the damage taken by Mr. I. Rumors assure that the Watery and Red Eye versions of Mr. I can combine, creating a new form that uses red tears that behave like lava, however, this is not confirmed.
Mr. Beast Eye[]
This iteration of Mr. I presents the appearance and abilities of an animal's eye. These ones are only a few examples: Spider eyes provide the enemy with seven copies of itself and a smaller size, goat eyes provide rectangular pupils that increase every stat when Mario is at the same height as Mr. I, fly eyes give enough aim and reaction speed to hit a player while performing BLJ and chameleon eyes make Mr. I capable of looking at any direction. This phenomena makes Mr. I the enemy with the greatest number of anomalous forms as there is an extraordinary amount of different iterations of Mr. I based on animals.
Mr. Beast Eye is also considered to be the instances of Mr. I that have other NPC's eyes, for example: Penguin eyes make the enemy non-aggressive until Mario grabs the little penguin, which makes Mr. I chase Mario and become faster if he makes the mother penguin angry or throws the little penguin off the stage, bob-omb eyes make the enemy blink and shoot at random intervals and, interestingly, Mr. I can merge with another Mr. I, which will create a special instance of the enemy that swaps itself with the eyes of the entities that get near it, causing weird interactions and effects.
Mr. I Skins[]
Mr. I can reportedly appear with different skins depending on the stage, these following skins are not an example of Enemy Discoloring but can change the behaviour of the enemy: Eye patched when in Jolly Roger Bay, making it useless as it can only hope for Mario to bump into it, with contact lens in Big Boo's Haunt that make its projectiles grow, with a magnifying glass held by a floating hand or anchored in the ground which makes its shots several times stronger when it looks through it (found in Tiny Huge Island) and a skin found in any level considered hard by the AI that features eyelids, eyelashes and even an eyebrow that floats above Mr. I, the position of the eyebrow changes the pattern of the projectiles, the eyelashes repel Mario and the eyelids prevent Mr. I from spinning around when closed.
Color Tracker Mr. I[]
This variation is similar to the Red Eye in appearance because it just changes the blue color of the iris for another one (this new color can be any color so it is possible that it ends up being the same blue as before or the same red as the Red Eye). This enemy behaves as a normal Mr. I, but will not react in any way if Mario spins it. In order to defeat it, Mario will have to make the enemy look towards something that has the same color as its iris for a couple of seconds. Despite the model not being able to look up, this Mr. I will track Mario even if he goes up or down. There is a chance that the color of the iris doesn't match anything on the stage, making the enemy invincible.
Moving Eye[]
During this abnormality, Mr. I will use borrowed script to be able to follow Mario, making it more difficult to make them dizzy. The movement is regularly bugged, and does not work properly in most scenarios. Some glitches include moving through walls, getting stuck on walls, falling through the floor, stopping mid-movement, and teleporting back to its spawn location after a certain period of time. While some people believe Mr. I was going to move at first but it got scrapped due to it being too difficult, this isn't the majority opinion. Instead, because of how bugged the movement always is, it's more often seen as the A.I. jumbling up code to try to increase difficulty.
Mrs. I[]
There's a few claims that Mr. I can be replaced by an enemy known as Mrs. I. It is told apart by a pink bow placed on top of their body, but accounts of their behavior or prevalence vary wildly. Sometimes it can move, sometimes it can't. Sometimes it's harder to damage, sometimes it shoots homing projectiles, sometimes it spawns other enemies with its eye. One account claims that Mrs. I can close its eye for short periods of time, giving it invulnerability windows that you need to wait to pass. As such, whether Mrs. I can be found or what its true common behavior is, is unknown. The A.I. would have needed to create the bow asset from somewhere, and there are varying theories on how that would happen if Mrs. I is to be believed.
