Motos are a scrapped enemy type for Super Mario 64. It was uncovered during the July 25th 2020 leak in the game's files, and where the enemy gets its name from.
Motos is a circular, robot-like enemy. Its body is comprised of a dark blue ball sprite, similar to that of a Bob-omb. The rest of the enemy is modelled, such as its small robotic head, two claw-like hands and metal feet. It's intended to chase Mario and attempt to grab him. If it does, it'll run forward before hurling him forward much like a Chuckya, a released enemy. It can be picked up like Big Bob-omb, and can be defeated by being thrown in lava like a Bully.[1]
Several supposed variants of Motos have been found referenced in the source code of Super Mario 64. The first is an Ice Motos that would likely have appeared in Cool, Cool Mountain and/or Snowman's Land, potentially as an replacement for the Chill Bully, a Big Motos which may have been a boss version of a Motos, and a Lava Motos with a currently unknown purpose.
Trivia[]
- Motos is likely to not actually be the name of the enemy, as that name is only an internal name, not an official one. Had Motos made it into the game, it'd likely have a different name given to them by the manual that would have used common naming conventions for Mario enemies.
- To support this idea, the source code reveals that the internal name of the Bully was Otos, implying a connection. To further add to this, the source code mentions an Ice Motos, drawing parallels with the Bully and its Chill Bully variant. Motos also resembles the Big Bob-Omb and has a similar behavior of throwing the player.
- An unused level known as Motos Factory exists, likely being the location where most of the Motos variants would be used, as well as the Motos itself. This level is also associated with some conceptualized level obstacles.
- The Motos are similar to Chuckya, an entity that made it into the game.
