Not to be confused with Mario Clones
The Mario Clone Event is an Easter Egg and Anomaly present within Super Mario 64 in which a Clone of Mario chases the player within the game after a specific set of actions are done (also known by the community as the Summoning Ritual).
How to Summon[]
The process in which the player summons the Mario Clone is quite simple, though it is very challenging to pull off; First, the player must collect all of the stars present within their copy regardless of how many they may be; They must then finish the game and reload their save.
After this is done, they must head for the castle, where the doors are locked, with a single Toad standing guard. Talking to the Toad, they will tell Mario to be careful, as Bowser has sent something after them as a last resort; Once the dialogue is finished, a scripted sequence occurs where the player, in the shoes of another player, must create a new file before the opening cutscene plays and the player is given back control over Mario, in which the Toad will warn Mario about the Clone and warn him to go inside the castle. Doing so will begin the Event.
The Mario Clone will then break into the castle and punch the player, causing all of their stars to be sent all over the worlds; Should the player get up and hunt for the stars, the Clone will begin chasing the player, its movements being based after the player's, killing them if it reaches them; The main objective is to get back the stars.
Additional Anomalies[]
- Strangely enough, upon summoning the Clone, it will begin appearing across every Nintendo game should the player play them, even if on illegitimate hardware or emulation, chasing them similarly like in Super Mario 64, causing some pieces of dialogue in those games (if there are any) to mention the Clone.
- When Hackers started digging into Super Mario 64's source code to find any code relating to this event and/or the Clone, they strangely found nothing.
Nothing is known about the cause behind these anomalies.
