Fated Ferry, also sometimes known as "Avarice Ark" or "Condemned Vessel", appears as an alternate version of Jolly Roger Bay, which it reportedly most commonly replaces. The course's geometry and structure also heavily resemble JRB, with a few notable exceptions such as the ship itself and the addition of a subarea known as "Unagi Tunnels".
The course also features unique missions, different textures and NPCs to interact with. These NPCs usually take a form reminiscent of Sea Captain Toad from Paper Mario: The Origami King, however they are usually referred to as "Sailor Toads".
Some players also claimed to have met a Toad character with a striking resemblence to Captain Toad, who had first appeared in Super Mario Galaxy released in 2007. This character is usually said to take on the role of the ferry's captain, and be a central piece in the missions of this course. This is thought to be simply the coincidental result of Entity Discoloring.
Geography[]
Unagi Tunnels[]
Unagi Tunnels (not to be confused with Cavern of the Unagi), resembles an underwater maze with several alcoves for mario to get air. Some players mentioned that the camera would change to a top-down view, which seems to be regarded as helpful to avoid the Unagis behind most corners in the tunnels, which will lunge at Mario on sight.
Near the end a narrow tunnel forces Mario to swim through another water switch, to find the last scroll in the urn at the other end. In the last section, the player finds themselves inside a partially submerged, cylindrical cave.
From the center bottom of described cave, a gigantic Unagi is emerging. Right above its mouth several normal sized Unagis are swimming around, one of them has a power star on its tail.
Fated Ferry[]
The ferry itself is said to heavily resemble Noah's Ark. It's divided into three decks: The upper deck features a narrow cabin and a trap door into the forecastle deck, which features a window and offers access to both middle and lower decks.
The lower deck is divided into several "nests", each supposedly containing two of each enemy in ones respective copy.
It's notable that the ark is thought to work as a compendium for enemies throughout extremely personalized copies, supposedly automatically adding two of each newly encountered enemies for the player to visit in earlier missions. The middle deck is where the barracks and most of the crew is located, it contains bunk beds, urns and Captain Toad.
Alchemy Table[]
The middle deck of the ark also supposedly contains an alchemy table. In some copies, said table is reported to be the center of an elaborate side-fetch-quest or puzzle, that requires the player to collect a set of unique items themed around materials with importance in alchemy. Supposedly located in other courses, the player would collect them in somehow fitting contexts, such as salt in water or metals in mines. Some players claimed to have had the advantage of the HUD indicating the amount and type of materials currently in possession, while the game didn't seem to really acknowledge the objective at all for others. Upon collection, the material is supposed to appear on the table by the player's next visit. By then throwing the correct combination, of the correct items into the cauldron, in the correct order, the player would be rewarded for completing the recipe.
Reports on the amount of materials required to proceed vary dramatically. From just 4, up to 3695 unique items would need to be brought back to the alchemy table in order to receive some sort of reward. Some reported rewards include a Laser Suit, a Gold Mario powerup or a unique item known as "Philosopher's Star", of unknown use or appearance, due to its rarity according to reports. However, it is rumored to let the player access a sort of alternative castle environment.
Missions[]
The following is an educated conjecture, based on partially contradicting information from several reports by different players. While some details may stay consistent among all of them, others will vary dramatically from copy to copy.
- "Meet the crew!" Talk to the toads on the deck of the ship. A specific NPC, with a striking resemblance to the much later realized Captain Toad, will tell you about their mission to retrieve ancient scrolls in the area and their inability to find them. He then asks Mario to help them search, after which he gives him a power star to convince him. The player can go to the crew and ask them about details of the current mission almost anytime.
- "Blast across the pillars!" Use the cannon to shoot to the stone pillars and jump across them to a platform located on the upper part of the level's edge to find a water switch along the way that lowers the water level significantly. Located at the end of the path is an urn, that contains a unique scroll collectible. Bring it to the Captain of the Ark to receive the power star
- "Breath of Life" Most reports mention this mission to simply require the player to collect 60 coins and then talking to the captain. However, some players supposedly had to encounter exactly two of 30 different enemies in their respective copy, in order to make them appear in the ferry and progress to the next mission.
- "Explore the Forgotten Cave!" The water is now low enough for the ship's cannon to destroy the rubble that blocks the cave's entrance. Enter the underwater cave and destroy the jars there, some will drop a unique scroll collectible while others release a gas that drains Mario's health very quickly, after finding 3 scrolls they can be given to Captain Toad to receive a power star. He will also reveal that these ancient scrolls are rumored to contain some sort of prophecy concerning bowser.
- "Enter the Unagi Tunnels!" The Toads inside the Ark tell Mario that they heard of a rumor stating that Unagi was protecting the last scroll, so he should enter its cave with the help of the Wing Cap to find it. The cave is revealed to be called Unagi Tunnels. To get the star, navigate through the maze and snatch the star from one of the Unagis at the end.
- "Curse of the Ancient Scrolls!" The water switch completely drained the level's water and the ship sunk to the ground. Mario can find 8 red coins hidden beneath 13 coffins, which behave like the ones in Big Boos Haunt, laying on the shore where he spawns.
