Not to be confused with the Prisoner, an anomalous Toad that either has to be freed from a cage or will steal items from the player. While this Toad can be considered an Enemy Toad, it has enough differences to be considered it's own anomaly.

Also not to be confused with Quin, another anomalous toad that can inform the players of anomalies in their copy.

Enemy Toads are anomalous Toads that, as the name suggests, attack the player. They usually appear as Toads with black dots and a black shirt, though can take on other appearances depending on the level. Enemy Toads are unique in the fact that they appear to have some sort of backstory or story relevance as multiple people report them being referenced by Toads in Princess Peach's Castle differently than most other things referenced by Toads.

Description[]

Enemy Toads typically have similar behaviors to Goombas, pacing around until spotting the player, who they will pursue and attempt to run into. However, due to their larger size, they pose more of a threat and reportedly deal more damage because of it. Notably, some people have even reported that Enemy Toads can latch onto the player and continually attack them, usually requiring the player to dive or repeatedly jump to get rid of the Enemy Toad.

Toads in Princess Peach's Castle can reportedly reference Enemy Toads, usually describing them as criminals or exiles that decide to attack the player because they're against the Mushroom Kingdom or have a particular vendetta against the player for some unknown reason. Another common story is that the Enemy Toads work for Bowser, explaining why they attack the player and why they're evil in general.

Appearances[]

Several different appearances for Enemy Toads have been reported. They typically appear as recolors of Toads, though some major differences in design have been reported. Enemy Toads usually maintain their behavior with different appearances, with some exceptions. A list of the most common appearances of Enemy Toads are:

  • Regular Enemy Toads: Regular Enemy Toads can appear in a majority of levels, particularly cave and Bowser levels, and even rarely in Princess Peach's Castle. They have black dots on their head and black shirts. As the name suggests, they are the most common type of Enemy Toad, and have the basic behavior.
  • Flaming Enemy Toads: Flaming Enemy Toads appear in lava levels or around areas with fire or lava. They have red dots on their head and red shirts. They typically have the same behavior, though reportedly can instead have the behavior of a Bully or make the player react as if they were on fire on contact.
  • Mummy / Skeletal Enemy Toads: Mummy and/or Skeletal Enemy Toads usually appear in pyramids, spooky areas, and/or dungeon-like areas, taking the appearance of mummies or skeletons, as the name would suggest. They can reportedly appear out of coffins or sarcophagi, and occasionally have the behavior of a Dry Bones, being able to throw their own bones and/or revive themselves. Some people have theorized that these types of Enemy Toads were the inspiration of the Mummy-Me enemy in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, though the large time gap makes this fairly unlikely.
  • Poisonous / Death Cap Enemy Toads: Poisonous / Death Cap Enemy Toads, the latter name being inspired by the poisonous mushroom in real life known as the Death Cap, appear usually in gloomy or dark areas similar to regular Enemy Toads, though have a purple color scheme and give the player a unique "poisoned" effect that gradually drains their health while they are latched onto the player until the Enemy Toad is removed. These Enemy Toads have been compared to the anomalous Poison Mushroom, due to their similar effects on the player and nature as opposites of their respective objects or characters.
