Dorrie

Dorrie as they appear in Super Mario 64.

Dorrie is a creature that appears in the lake area of Hazy Maze Cave. They are a large blue plesiosaur with a white streak from their underbelly going up to the lower jaw, 4 fins, a tail, a tongue in their mouth, and 2 beady black eyes. Upon their back being ground pounded, their head will lower, allowing the player to jump on it. They circle around the island in the center of the area until the player gets on their head, which allows them to steer it. Dorrie is used to reach a Power Star in Hazy Maze Cave, as well as the door to the hallway leading to Cavern of the Metal Cap.

Phenomena[]

"Don't become it's lunch."[]

This quote is from a sign in the lake area where Dorrie is found. This quote has sparked the interest of many, as Dorrie does not attack the player. This appears to hint at an unused behavior of Dorrie where they could attack the player, or some other anomaly such as Mother Dorrie or the Dorrie boss fight in Salty, Salty Shore. However, other reports claim that Dorrie can actually get violent, usually after being ground pounded, and will chase the player through the water and attempt to bite them. Some reports also claim that this behavior of Dorrie can be encountered if you can somehow drain the lake, usually by pressing a switch underwater.

Lava Dorrie[]

Several reports have claimed to encounter an orange or red Dorrie found in Lethal Lava Land, Bowser in the Fire Sea or other anomalous lava levels such as Boiling Hot Basalt that acts identically to the regular Dorrie. This may be an instance of Enemy Discoloring applying to an otherwise friendly NPC, though no other reports of such an instance have occurred, except for technically Enemy Toads. The implications of this anomaly is unclear.
