Developer Dialogue refers to text strings and commented out parts of script files left by the developers, likely not meant to be seen by the players. However, due to Dynamic Level Rearrangement, these text strings may reappear in the game. It is unknown what some of these notes refer to, due to appearing randomly in the game.
List of Known Developer Dialogue[]
There are currently 28 known lines of developer dialogue, 21 of them were translated into English, 7 are English only and were added by employees in Nintendo of America. Bolded text is for text only in English.
The Developer Dialogue[]
“FIXME: The ripple effect isn’t working here, can’t figure out why for the life of me.”
“Probably should add some more cois[sic] to this part”
“Advertising department really wants that trailer, it doesn’t have to be fully functional just functional enough, we can fix the quirks later.”
“FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHY ISN’T THIS WORKING”
"I regret to hear of your frustration. If it would help, would you like to exchange tasks with me?"
“FIXME: Entering the mountain[sic] map crashes the game, squash this before the show because this is one of the demo levels”
"Which one?"
“Hey about that one rabbit character we have, is it possible we could maybe work him to be more than just a testing dummy? I’d feel bad for having him in all this time just to not have him in the final game.”[1]
"We need some sort of new enemy, this area feels too generic."
"One of the testers figured out you can get this star without having to use the Metal Cap, we’ll probably just fix it later."
"Apologies, but unfortunately we do not have any information to offer on that version."
“Collision is just non-existent here for some reason”
"Ok now there's too much collision, if we have time, we should double check the geometry. Ditto for the clock map"
"Please remove the cacti from the 'Hot Hot Desert' course. In reality, this type of desert has no cacti."
“TODO: We need some more toads, castle feels really barren”
"The appearance of the 'Wallman' enemy has been redesigned. Please begin work on implementing it."
"Why do I think?"
"Can whoever is removing Bowser's textures please stop? We get it, Ultimate Bowser looks sick without textures, but we have a game to work on."
"Why can Mario just stand on the platform in the last Kuppa fight while it's tilted? That makes no sense."
"It was not easy, but the collision[sic] of the moving parts in Kuppa's final arena should now function as intended."
"One of the QA guys found that you could groundpound the Whomp King without moving out of the way. Can anyone fix that?"[2]
"Mario died for no reason when I jumped to the triangle-printing thing in snowman land why"
"The larger robotic enemy will be removed. In terms of function, it is too similar to the 'Popoi' enemy."
"What causes the yellow toad in the basement to show up? Can't find their script files for the life of me."
“TODO: One of the testers figured out you can get this star without having to use the cannon. Can someone please fix this?”[3]
"It is disappointing that the glitch cannot be removed at this time, but it seems it can't be helped. Please try to at least limit its capabilities."[4]
"There's a typo in Yoshi's dialogue. Can somebody go fix that for me?"[5]
"What do we do with that Delicious Cake string? It isn't used anywhere to my knowledge so why translate it? Should we repurpose it for a sign or NPC?"
Plot Alterations[]
In rare cases, the plotline of a specific area or even the entire game may be altered to accommodate for these. For example, the text “We need some sort of new enemy, this area feels too generic.” may be explained as an in-universe comment by Bowser, looking to further militarize the painting worlds with his armies.
Footnotes[]
- ↑ The idea of re-adding MIPS into the final game might've first been proposed here.
- ↑ Refers to a glitch where you can clip through the Whomp King while it's smashing down.
- ↑ Refers to a glitch in Whomp's Fortress during the Blast Away the Wall star, in which you walk at just the right angle to clip through the wall you need the cannon to destroy and get the star without destroying the wall.
- ↑ This is theorized to be a reply to either 2 or 3 and suggests that the developers could not fix a glitch.
- ↑ There was a typo in Yoshi's dialogue that says "Mario!!! It that really you???" However, this was never fixed.
