The Cookya is a character, specifically, an enemy, that was planned to appear in Super Mario 64. Cookya did not appear in the game in any capacity, and was scrapped early in development, along with several courses which may or may not have featured Cookya as an enemy type. According to an anonymous source who worked for Nintendo of Japan at the time, Cookya was intended to appear in Lethal Lava Land before being scrapped.
Behavior[]
Although Cookya never appeared in Super Mario 64, an anonymous source who worked for Nintendo of Japan, spreading details and leaking design documents under the alias "A" on gaming forums explained that, "[Cookya] was supposed to waddle around, on solid ground and in lava, wherever lava was. Lethal Lava Land was going to have Cookya wandering around, when the developers still wanted to include it. They tasked some of us with sketching up rough drafts, chicken scratch, really, of enemies they could work with. New enemies. Cookya was going to breathe fire if it spotted Mario, like Bowser does in the final game. I think the developers wanted to have Cookya's breath range to be limited when compared to Bowser's own range, though. Jumping on Cookya wouldn't have ended well for Mario, since [the enemy] has fire coming out of his head, too! In the end, I think the developers figured that Cookya wouldn't be utilized anywhere near enough to warrant actually working on him. Kind of sad. I like him a lot."
Trivia[]
- Cookya's facial features, although exceedingly rough, appear somewhat similar to the odd, macabre portrait which leads Mario into Lethal Lava Land.
- "A" has leaked several other enemies that were intended, at some point, to appear in Super Mario 64. All of these enemies have gone completely unused, as proven by particularly revealing Leaks.
