Behind Chain Chomp's Gate

A Chain Chomp as seen in Bob-omb Battlefield.

The Chain Chomp is an enemy in Bob-omb Battlefield. It is a large black ball with a mouth and eyes, attached to a pole. It will charge at Mario when he draws near. If you ground pound the pole in the mission Behind Chain Chomp's Gate, it will jump around, destroying the gate blocking the star next to it, and jump away.

Phenomena[]

White-Eyed Chain Chomp[]

Main Article: White-Eyed Chomp

The White-Eyed Chomp, often shortened to WEC, is an anomalous version of the Chain Chomp with purely white eyes and a lack of pupils. If the WEC is encountered, it foreshadows future personalization. Some examples of WEC encounters and their aftermaths are listed in the White-Eyed Chomp AI Experience Logs.

Small Chain Chomp[]

Small Chain Chomps are allegedly an enemy found in certain personalized copies of Super Mario 64. They take the appearance of the Chain Chomp seen in Bob-omb Battlefield, only much smaller (around the size of a Chuck-ya) and attached to a smaller pole. They act relatively the same as the big Chain Chomp, with the only variation usually being that small Chain Chomps deal less damage than their larger counterparts. Small Chain Chomps have been reported to be found in the stages Bob-omb Battlefield, especially the anomalous Chomp Caverns area, Whomp's Fortress, Tiny-Huge Island, Tick Tock Clock, and Tall, Tall Mountain.

Freed Chain Chomp[]

The Freed Chain Chomp is an anomalous behavior of the Chain Chomp that can reportedly be encountered upon collecting the Power Star obtained by freeing the Chain Chomp from it's pole. This Chain Chomp reportedly jumps around with no particular goal until spotting the player, who it will target, similarly to other enemies such as Goombas and Bob-ombs. This behavior is notably very similar to a behavior of Chain Chomp seen in Super Mario 64 DS in the Silver Stars mission of Bob-omb Battlefield, and has also been reported to occur with the White-Eyed Chomp anomaly as well.

Rideable Chain Chomp[]

The Rideable Chain Chomp is another anomalous Chain Chomp behavior with a similar requirement to the Freed Chain Chomp, requiring the star obtained by freeing the Chain Chomp to be collected. The Chain Chomp can reportedly then be found, jumping around in a certain area, and can be mounted by the player and controlled, being able to navigate the level and destroy enemies with ease, often being compared to the Metal Cap or Mushroom in Super Mario 64 DS due to it's increase in player size with the added Chain Chomp and similarity to invincibility. However, reporters have claimed that riding the Chain Chomp has a time limit, and that when this time limit is reached the Chain Chomp will drop the player and jump away, unable to be found again in the level unless it is re-entered or reappears at all, as some reports claim that the Rideable Chain Chomp appears once and never again.

Gold Chain Chomp[]

Rarely, the Chain Chomp can be replaced with a golden variant in some copies. This version has no behavioral differences, but it drops a pile of coins every time the stake is hit. This makes getting the 100 Coin Star much easier than normal.

Missing Chain Chomp[]

On rare occasions, the Chain Chomp will be completely absent from the save file being played. This would make the star, "Behind Chain Chomp's Gate" impossible without glitches, making a 100% run on the selected save file also impossible without glitches. Though, this has only been reported on very few copies, so it's not likely it would happen on a natural playthrough.
