There are two types of stages in Super Mario 64: Levels and courses. Levels are small courses, typically with one Star, though may have more. They usually have Eight Red Coins and rarely if ever have a hundred coin Star. They may also reside within a course, and be given the additional designation of a sublevel. Both levels and courses count as Areas.
