Bloobers, more commonly known as Bloopers, are aquatic squid enemies in the Super Mario Bros. series, first appearing in the original Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo Entertainment System. They take the appearance of white or pink squids with a black part of their face containing their eyes. They most commonly swim around, damaging the player upon contact, though can use ink in some games. They can usually be defeated using a Fire Flower or other power-up.

Several variants of Bloobers have appeared throughout the Super Mario Bros. series. There are Blooper Nannies which have several smaller Bloobers named Blooper Babies that follow them around, "land Bloobers", also known as Gesso, that roam on land, flying Bloobers, ridable Bloobers named Blooper Racers, and several others in more spin-offs. The most common Bloober variant is the Gooper Blooper, a large boss version of the Bloober.

Phenomena[]

Super Mario 64 Manifestation[]

Bloobers are referenced as unused enemies in the files of Super Mario 64 as Bloobers. It is believed they would have appeared in Jolly Roger Bay, Dire, Dire Docks, and/or other water areas or levels. Not much else is known about what the Bloobers would have done, though some speculate that they would have actually been called Bloopers and that Bloober is simply an internal name, similarly to the name of the Motos enemy.

Notably, Bloobers appear to occasionally be reported in more personalized copies of Super Mario 64, which is notable due to no model being attached to the Bloober currently being located. They usually follow the general behavior of Bloobers, and also appear to have most variants appear in some reports as well. They have a unique attack that sprays ink onto Mario, obscuring the screen much like the Mario Kart item. Strangely, Gooper Bloopers and Land Bloobers appear to be the most common variants and/or manifestations, due to both first appearing in Super Mario Sunshine, which is the next mainline Super Mario Bros. games, implying they were scrapped from Super Mario 64 and reimplemented with their old functionality into the next game.
