Alternate Campaigns is a type of rare anomaly in some personalized copies of Super Mario 64 where a secondary version of the game manifests, usually with a variety of other anomalies such as Dynamic Level Rearrangement, several new levels and sometimes even a new hub world. These Alternate Campaigns usually have to be unlocked somehow, typically through Sudden Restructuring, though some Alternate Campaigns have been reported to be accessible at the beginning of the game.
List of Campaigns[]
This list of Alternate Campaigns only goes over well-documented and verified instances of the anomaly, as other Alternate Campaigns could be falsified. Some common details may be left out in the descriptions of Alternate Campaigns in order to make them less specific to certain copies and applicable to more instances of the anomaly.
Luigi Campaign[]
The Luigi Campaign is the most common Alternate Campaign currently documented, and is characterized by playing as Luigi. This can supposedly take place in an alternative version of Princess Peach's Castle where Princess Peach is replaced by Princess Daisy, another character commonly associated with Luigi, though this is not always the case. The collectibles in this campaign usually remain as Power Stars, though some have reported that Luigi collects Green Stars or a unique type of collectible resembling gems or crystals with no consistent name. Due to the new hub world commonly associated with the Luigi Campaign, this campaign reportedly has the most amount of entirely new anomalous levels. However, some people have reported that their version of the Luigi Campaign has the hub world of the Green Star Campaign, being the same castle as the normal game but with anomalous levels. This campaign is usually unlocked alongside a playable Luigi.
Green Star Campaign[]
The Green Star Campaign is another common Alternate Campaign where Power Stars are replaced with Green Stars, similarly to the Luigi Campaign. The hub world usually remains the same as the base game, though most levels are commonly replaced with anomalous levels of similar themes, such as Bob-omb Battlefield being replaced with Bob-omb Village. This campaign's requirements to play are largely inconsistent, though several reports claim it does have to be unlocked in some fashion.
Post-Bad Ending Campaign[]
The Post-Bad Ending Campaign is a campaign consistently unlocked after obtaining a bad ending or another type of Alternate Ending with a negative outcome. This campaign usually takes place directly after the bad ending, usually in a new hub world such as the Sunken Castle, His Domain or a unique Bowser's Castle area, commonly having new levels due to the hub world change. Beating this campaign has been reported to cause another Alternate Ending known as the Savior Ending that results in the game being restored to it's pre-bad ending state.
Theorizing[]
Alternate Campaigns appear to be taken from a much older and much more ambitious version of Super Mario 64 not yet documented, as the game has consistently only been said to have one main campaign throughout it's development. Another theory claims that Alternate Campaigns are made entirely by the Personalization A.I. in order to make the game more enjoyable, though due to the scope of this anomaly, some have claimed that this anomaly is too largescale to be entirely created by the A.I.
